A Great War tells the story of two soldiers and a young woman whose lives are upended by a war they thought would bring unity and triumph. Michael Weis is a patriotic Jewish private who enlists with the fervent belief that showing honor in battle will end the rampant anti-semitism in Germany. He quickly proves himself to be a natural soldier. His fiancee Gisela joins the war department as a mail censor, a role that grows in importance throughout the war. Her complex relationship with Cuttner, a fast-rising officer, leads her to question her assumptions about her own ideals, her relationship with Michael and what it means to be a German Jew. Meanwhile as Michael somehow survives the bloodiest battles of the war, his exuberance is replaced by a hardened realism. When he learns a dangerous secret about how the war started, he finds his quest for honor has turned to a desperate thirst for truth.
